Most business students nowadays are generally required as part of their studies or based independently pursuit of a personal competitive advantage, to look for out internship in China. For many European students you have the double challenge of finding multiple internships as well as finding them in certain foreign location. For American students, from a number of disciplines, it is not a question of ‘if I will do an internship’ but more a problem of when and where.
Whether it be French business students seeking a retail internship in Turkey or perhaps an Australian student doing their internship within their gap year, the supreme question for you is still, “Just how do i purchase one?”
Everyone applies for ‘that’ internship which is advertised every year. Avoid this one much like the plague. Start by building a summary of your own personal network – your Dad’s friends; your Uncle Johnny, the CEO; the man from industry who presented with your class; a guy you saw at TEDx;, etc.
Better to have a list that is your own unique list – merely one person taking a look at it – compared to a list where Everybody has access – hundreds or a huge number of students chasing the marketing internship.
No point in looking for a job the place you don’t have a passion or have few skills. You will hate it plus they may hate you. The name from the bet on internships would be to develop your CV and to gain referees along the way. Neither will happen should you don’t fit the organisation.
As above, nevertheless in reverse. In the event you don’t like them plus they turn out to be no use ( eg. you spend 3 months filing meaningless documents instead of doing anything worthwhile), then it’s a lose-lose.
Think of businesses that provide you with standalone project work – you begin and complete one job over the course of your internship. You build skills and they also get a real outcome.
Most study tours visit 15-20 companies over 2-3 weeks. Be brave enough to inquire every single presenter for a business card and add those to your very own contact list. (see Point 1)
The whole reason you need to do an internship is always to overcome the perennial problem of ‘I can’t obtain a job because We have no experience; I can’t get experience because I actually have no job’. Be intternship that your jobs line up throughout the same theme (eg. urban planning; advertising; cost accounting, etc). Doing this demonstrates both consistency and experience to future ‘real job’ (rather than internship) employers.
A final thought (might have been a sixth point but wasn’t) is DON’T, DON’T, DON’T use marketing internship to find you an internship. They break each of the five rules, charge lots of money for very little work and usually poorly match intern and company – and quite often breach visa regulations whilst lying about doing this.
